Bockgården is the name of our farm that is found in one of the historically rich village called Sjurberg. Sjurberg is situated just northwest of Rättvik in the central part of Sweden, a region called Dalarna. Among other things, the village is famous with its well designed chimneys and rich culture.
The buildings’ architecture is mixed depending on the village’s specific development. In the end of 19th century, in connection with the railway extension to Rättvik, the village changed drastically when the wealthy urban people moved in a big number to the pleasant surroundings around Lake Siljan. There are number of books that describe Sjurberg and its farms including Bockgården. The book “Byar och fäbodar i Rättviks Kommun” (“Villages and summer-farms in Rättvik district”), gives a good description of the environment in the village of Sjurberg. In the same book, it is written that the best conserved farm is Bockgården with well preserved living houses and a complete traditional arrangement of the out-house buildings.
Bockgården lies very close to Lake Siljan and the village’s fantastic bath-beach with smooth rocks and grand old forest in a harmonious setting. While many other farm units have rationalized in Sweden, Bockgården is today considered to be one of the small and well conserved farms. Towards the west and south from the homestead, with a slight inclination towards Lake Siljan, spreads the farm’s agricultural land where you will see some of the farm’s “gute”-sheep (the Swedish ancestors’ sheep). There is also a small forest just north of the homestead. Along the Rättvik – Orsa boundary there is a summer-farm house and forest that has been within our family in many generations.
This is part of the surrounding that we sincerely wish to share with you – Welcome and experience Bockgården!
